Jones agreed to terms with MLS on August 24 2014, allowing him to become a designated player and to make $4.7 million in 18 months. This German-American player plays as a central midfielder for the New England Revolution. He is also a part of the US national team.
5) Tim Cahill, New York Red Bulls ($3.63 million)
Tim Cahill joined Red Bulls in the summer of 2012 as a designated player. He was paid approximately £1 million. Since then he has had quite a roller coaster MLS career. He helped the team win the Supporters’ Shield, the first meaningful trophy in the club history, in 2013. The goal he scored on May 19 2013 turned out to be the winner in the 91st minute against the Los Angeles Galaxy in a 1-0 win. He set a record for the fastest goal in the history of the league when he scored eight seconds into a 3-0 win against the Houston Dynamo.
