10) Keith Gillespie (British)
Keith Gillespie was once a member of Manchester United’s golden generation. He played alongside Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Paul Scholes when they won the Youth Cup in 1992. Later on Keith won 80 caps for Northern Ireland and helped Newcastle reach the Champions League. In spite of all his success, he was declared bankrupt when he was 35 years of age. He lost around £7,215,875 on gambling, property and failed business schemes. He published the book How Not To Be A Football Millionaire in 2014. Opening up about his gambling addiction in an interview, he said, “I blew all my money betting, and won’t be last footballer to do it.”
9) Chris Sutton (British)
Chris Sutton is one half of the famous SOS – Sutton and Shearer – strike force which helped to win the league for Blackburn. This former Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea striker was the first £5 million transfer football player in the United Kingdom. Sutton’s finances hit a low in 2014. This was because he became embroiled in a multi-million pound fraud after investing £50,000 in a spread betting foreign currency scheme. He and his wife invested £100,000 into the scam run by accountant Simon Grinter’s company. He went into bankruptcy in May 2014.
