When Steve was very young, his family moved from the east coast to Cleveland where he attended Glenville High School. He graduated in 1974 and headed back home to West Virginia for college.
After dropping out of college, he started working various jobs from a postman to an insurance salesman. It wasn’t until later that he found his true calling was on stage as an entertainer.

While still hosting Showtime at the Apollo, he earned his own sitcom, The Steve Harvey Show which aired on the WB network. It was one of the few shows that gained popularity on the network prior to the abundance of teen drama series such as Dawson’s Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Steve was able to gain a significant following of devoted fans among African-American viewers. His show stayed on until 2002.
