Steve Harvey is an American comedian, actor, radio and TV personality who has a long list of accomplishments throughout his career. While many of his new fans know him as the current host of the long-running game show Family Feud, Steve Harvey’s career involves much more than keeping things civil between contestants.
Broderick Steven Harvey was born in Welch, West Virginia on January 17, 1957. The stand-up comedian was the youngest of five children. His parents were Eloise and Jesse Harvey. When Steve was very young, his family moved from the east coast to Cleveland where he attended Glenville High School. He graduated in 1974 and headed back home to West Virginia for college.
After dropping out of college, he started working various jobs from a postman to an insurance salesman. It wasn’t until later that he found his true calling was on stage as an entertainer.
Steve Harvey performed his stand-up routine for the first time in 1985. After spending time in comedy clubs for years, he made the finals for the Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search in 1989. After that, his career finally started to take off.
He took on the job as host for Showtime at the Apollo, which was a syndicated variety show filmed at the famous Apollo Theater. He remained as host until 2000 when he left to take on several different projects.
While still hosting Showtime at the Apollo, he earned his own sitcom, The Steve Harvey Show which aired on the WB network. It was one of the few shows that gained popularity on the network prior to the abundance of teen drama series such as Dawson’s Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Steve was able to gain a significant following of devoted fans among African-American viewers. His show stayed on until 2002.
During his time on his sitcom, Steve became partners with fellow comedian Cedric the Entertainer, who also starred on the show. The pair started the groundbreaking comedy tour known as The Kings of Comedy.
Steve and Cedric were joined by two other comedians, Bernie Mac and D.L. Hughley. The team hit the road in 1999 and their show became the highest grossing stand up tour ever in the United States. It earned the comedians more than $19 million.
The foursome became household names and went on to star in multiple films and TV shows. They were also the focus of Spike Lee’s documentary, The Original Kings of Comedy which was released in 2000.
While Harvey may be best known for his part in The Kings of Comedy tour, he used his fame to build a multimedia empire that is still going strong today.
In 2000, Steve Harvey started a daily radio talk show known as The Steve Harvey Morning Show. It aired in Los Angeles and Dallas at first before gaining national syndication. It still airs every day on multiple stations all throughout the country.
Steve won the Radio & Records magazine award for Syndicated Personality/Show of the Year in 2007.
After a six-year run, The Steve Harvey Show ended in 2002. But that didn’t mean it was time for Steve to slow down. He started working on other projects such as a brief reality show Steve Harvey’s Big Time and made his debut on the big screen in The Fighting Temptations in 2003. He later starred in additional films including You Got Served in 2004 and was a voice actor for the animated film Racing Stripes in 2005.
Steve also became a bestselling author and published two relationship-guide books Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man in 2009 and Straight Talk, No Chaser in 2010.
According to statistics in 2017, Steve Harvey’s net worth is $120 million. He experienced a $25 million setback in 2008 due to issues with the IRS but has clearly bounced back from that mishap.
Steve Harvey has won several awards throughout his career. He won the BET Humanitarian Award for his contribution to entertainment in 2011. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013, placing him among the elite group of African American celebrities who have received that honor.
Steve was granted an honorary doctorate degree from Alabama State University in 2016 and he won two Emmy awards for Outstanding Game Show Host and Outstanding Talk Show.
Steve Harvey continues his reign as host of the popular game show Family Feud where he adds his comedic touch to his interactions with the contestants. He is also working on reviving Showtime at the Apollo and hosts the variety talent show Little Big Shots. His popular daytime talk show is also slated to return in September of 2018.
