2. Philip Anschutz ($11 billion), Los Angeles Lakers
Anschutz shares ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers in conjunction with the Buss family, having amassed his fortune through his work with the AEG empire. The AEG group is also responsible for the operation of the Staples Center, the Lakers’ arena. Anschutz also owns the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL, a team that has won two Stanley Cup titles over the past three years. He’s owned several MLS franchises, currently claiming a piece of the Houston Dynamo and full ownership of the LA Galaxy.
1. Paul Allen ($17 billion), Portland Trail Blazers
Allen is by far the wealthiest owner in the NBA and NFL, he was able to purchase the Portland Trail Blazers for the comparatively low price of $70 million all the way back in 1988. He also owns the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders. The Sounders are considered to be the most valuable in the entire league. It was also his idea to construct the Seahawks’ CenturyLink Field for maximum noisiness, giving Seattle a very unique home field advantage.
