1) Gareth Bale
Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid – €91-100-million (2013)
Gareth Bale’s transfer to Real Madrid saw him become the most expensive transfer in football history. Madrid paid Tottenham an initial €91-million for Bale which, depending on add-ons, could eventually reach €100-million. It represents quite the change in fortunes for Bale, who almost signed for Birmingham City in 2009 following a poor start at Tottenham. Bale first attracted Madrid’s attention following his, and Tottenham’s, inaugural season in the Champions League in 2010. Bale put in two man-of-the-match performances in two legs against champions Internazionale, scoring a hat trick in a 4-3 defeat in the first leg and supplying 2 assists in a 3-1 second leg win. Since signing for Madrid, Bale has put in a number of match winning performances, most notably the 2014 Copa del Rey final and Champions League final.
