He is the eldest son of Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien III. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah succeeded the throne after his father relinquished his power on October 4, 1967. The sultan is worth about $20 billion. He has received several awards coming from leaders of other nations.
One peculiar law that the sultan implements is the Shaira law, which states that anyone who admitted crimes such as adultery, abortion, and even homosexual act will be punished. The punishments are flogging, severing of limbs and even death by stoning. He and his family are exempted from the law though.
