In today’s world, women have excelled in almost all fields which hitherto were dominated by men. They have made important contributions in all walks of life, including sports. However in the field of sports, even though their contributions have been significant, they are yet to receive their due.
Three women featured in the world’s 100 highest paid athletes 2014 list released by Forbes recently. Here is a brief overview of each of them.
#1. Maria Sharapova ($24.4 million)
This immensely talented tennis player is 34th among the top 100 highest paid athletes in the world. Aged 27, Maria earned $2.4 million through salary and winnings; and $22 million through endorsements.
Maria Sharapova was injured in the second half of 2013 due to which she could play only one match. This affected her income through prize money and exhibition fees. Nike sold Cole Haan in 2013. This also impacted her income negatively. She used to receive huge royalties on her best selling line of Cole Haan shoes.
Maria Sharapova won her second French Open title in 2014. This was her fifth Grand Slam title. She launched Sugarpova, her own candy line, in 2012; and sold 1.3 million bags at around $5 a pop during one year period. Now she has tied up with Avon Products. This happened just after her Roland Garros victory. This Russian woman is single. Max Eisenbud is her agent and IMG Worldwide, Inc. is her agency.
#2. Li Na ($23.6 million)
Aged 32, Li Na is 41st among the top 100 highest paid athletes. This Chinese tennis player made $5.6 million through her salary and winnings; and $18 million through endorsements. Marriage has not impacted her performance in the tennis court.
#3. Serena Williams ($22 million)
This 32-year old American tennis star is 55th in the list. She has dominated women’s tennis since turning pro in 1995. She earned $11 million through salary and winnings and $11 million through endorsements.
The above-mentioned ladies inspire millions of girls who dream of making a career in sports.
